SZA’s “Doves In The Wind” Video Pays Homage to Asian Cinematography

I was lightweight upset that SZA didn’t perform “Doves In The Wind” at Coachella Weekend 2, but this will definitely satisfy my craving. The TDE songstress finally unravels the music video, which features her and Kendrick Lamar (but in this case more so his alter ego Kung Fu Kenny), in a battle of the sexes.

The NABIL film recalls traditional Asian cinematography, and both Top Dawg Entertainment artists masterfully play their roles in this battle. As Lamar sits atop a mountain peak, he’s challenged by a vagrant female soldier (SZA) to prove that pussy is power. Especially now is a perfect time to present this video when female empowerment is still missing in modern hip hop.

Though we’re in a time where culturally appropriation is a frequent topic of discussion, I feel that the folks over at Top Dawg are paying homage to Asian culture. This video wasn’t presented in a racist manner, and it was very entertaining between the introductory transition, the sound effects, and even the unsynchronized lip-to-vocal conversations. As an Asian-American, this was pretty fuckin’ cool.
