The Simpsons’ Homage to Hip-Hop, Cameos from Common, RZA & More

This past Sunday night, the Simpsons drew inspiration from The Great Gatsby and blended the soul of hip-hop into an hour long episode entitled “The Great Phatsby.”

Story | Adam Douglas

In the hour long special Mr. Burns becomes friends with music mogul Jay G. (Jay Gatsby) who convinces Burns to spend his money recklessly in an effort to overthrow him.

The episode is full of references especially made for hip-hop fans such as Suge Knight and Vanilla Ice’s roof dangling altercation. It also features cameos from rappers Common, Snoop Dogg and RZA. Also making appearances are Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele) who plays Jazzy James, an ex-collaborator of Jay G’s and Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) as Cookie, Jay G’s ex-wife.

The Simpsons also reached out to producer Jim Beanz who recently finished up working on the soundtrack for the latest season of Empire:

“I was humbly grateful and completely shocked that they called me for this episode,” Beanz told Billboard. “But at the same time, I was ready for it.”
