“Bodak Yellow” Meets Kaepernick, Trump Because of Oswin Benjamin

In recent weeks Cardi B‘s first hit single “Bodak Yellow” peaked the Billboard Top 100 Charts at #1, becoming the first female rapper to top the charts without a feature since “Doo Wop (That Thing)” by Lauryn Hill in 1998. It’s unquestionably the most popular song in the world right now, so it’s no question as to why lyricists take advantage of its wave.

Oswin Benjamin puts his usually unusual twist to “Bodak Yellow” with a remade beat from Rodtheproducer. The two previously linked up on Benjamin’s rendition to “Mask Off”, which has garnered over 14,000 plays on Soundcloud. Just as he did on the previous remix, the New York-native ensures nationwide news stays relevant in today’s hip hop, as he tackles topics from the #TakeAKnee Movement started by Colin Kaepernick and the actions of U.S. President Donald Trump.

“I’d rather see my demise then stay inside of a nation where I’m a son of bitch if I’m taking a stand… by kneeling”

Before the elections in 2016, YG released his single “FDT (Fuck Donald Trump)” off Still Brazy, which created a domino effect for other rappers to speak their minds about Donald Trump. The single enticed a remix with G-Eazy and Macklemore (which I think is a powerful collaboration since they’re both white rappers), and widened the doors for other artists like Alyssa Marie, Joey Bada$$, and Logic to speak about Trump on their own projects; not to mention Eminem unleashing a flurry of words describing his reasons for his hatred toward the President with step-by-step lyrics.

However, I don’t see Oswin Benjamin as just another rapper who hates Donald Trump. Granted his rendition to “Bodak Yellow” was released much later than all the aforementioned records, this one line integrates which integrates his hatred for Trump, involvement in the sports world, and witty lyricism that instills his knowledge on current events becomes the selling point to the entire record:

“Fuck a Trump visitation/Stephen Curry how I’m leading the league in assist and I’m passing on invitations”

Oswin Benjamin instills his ability to take real world events and put them together in a clever way with his words. And isn’t that what we look for when it comes to a true emcee?

Benjamin is looking to release his Godfrey LP in the near future. Stay tuned.
