Here we are again. The Cleveland Cavaliers are 1-3 for the second year in a row, fighting for the NBA title against the Golden State Warriors, for a third year in a row. Talk about stress.
As a native Clevelander, I have been raised on the hopes and prayers that MAYBE one day, ONE of my sports teams would earn a championship. Cleveland has been known as the “Mistake on the Lake,” a city where all good things go to die, and more unfortunately where heinous crimes are committed. We have hundreds of drug-related deaths per year in Cuyahoga County and our river caught on fire in the 1970s. Sounds like a great place huh?

Well, our city is just that, our city. Chances are if you’re from Cleveland, so are your ancestors (I happen to be 8th generation). Every year we take pride in the surrounding area from the Metroparks to dollar hot dog night at Jacobs Field (*cough* I mean Progressive Field), to the Craft Fairs at local high schools, and game days for the Indians, Browns, and Cavaliers.
Some great things have come from Cleveland too. Musically, there’s Kid Cudi, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Machine Gun Kelly, Black Keys, Twenty One Pilots, Devo and Nine Inch Nails. We also have LeBron James until he leaves again.
While we wait for Game 5, take a look at some Cleveland Hype videos below.
First let’s throw it back to the 1980’s for this killer classic rock tribute theme song for the Cavaliers.
Fast forward to 2010, the second darkest day in Cleveland sports history, when our superstar player quit believing in us and took his “talents to South Beat and [joined] the Miami Heat.” That single decision spread years of devastation across our city, enraging natives so heavily that there were jersey burning parties and a remembrance that we, as Cleveland-ites need to stick together. This event created a new wave of Cleveland pride and disses from rapper Machine gun Kelly, who famously dissed LeBron on ‘Wild Boy’ and then, released ‘Til I Die’. #CLETilIDie
Then LeBron came back, and for most of the city, hope began restoring in our hearts and on our streets. We all came ‘Together’ (thanks NIKE).
In 2015, we were defeated by the Warriors in six games. However, our roster was shaping up and we jumped right back into the 2016 season with vengeance. Lil Wayne dropped the single ‘Off Off Off’, to shout out his Cleveland Cavs squad – J.R. Smith, Kyrie (Uncle Drew), Shumpert, Thompson, James, and everyone else.
We were also blessed with this beauty for none other than 80’s night at the Q (*cough Gund Arena).
I’m not sure how this series will end, but I do know that I am proud to be from a city that has so much pride built from heartbreak and dreary snow days; because CLEVELAND ROCKS.
Game 5 of the 2017 NBA Finals between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors will be on Monday, June 12 at 9PM EST on ABC.
