Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf announces June 16th as Tupac Shakur Day.
Kendrick Lamar proclaimed: “everybody gon’ respect the shooter, but the one in front of the gun lives forever.” This line from his good kid m.a.a.d. city “Money Trees” recently exemplified its point with one of the most influential Hip-Hop artists to have a special day named after him.

As of June 16, 2016, 45th birth anniversary of the legendary Tupac Shakur, the city of Oakland immortalizes the day as Tupac Shakur Day, which pays homage to the late-rapper’s contributions to the community. Though Shakur was born on the East Coast, it’s no question that the Better Dayz rapper represents Oakland as home – exemplified in his single “My Block”.
“Although Tupac was born in Harlem, New York City in 1971, later lived in Baltimore, Maryland and in Marin City, California, he cherished his time in Oakland as his home, stating that he got his ‘Game’ from Oakland,” as read in the proclamation from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf’s office. “Tupac once said” ‘…I give all my love to Oakland, if I’ma claim somewhere I’ma claim Oakland.”
Happy Birthday Tupac, and a big shoutout to Oakland for immortalizing your influence.
