Presenting the Top 5 Most Anticipated Rap Albums of 2017

2016 is long and gone now and with it we saw some great releases from some of our favorite artists. J. Cole dropped his fan-splitting 4 Your Eyez Only, Childish Gambino’s funkadelic Awaken, My Love! and Kanye’s The Life of Pablo. So with the new year just beginning, The Lunch Table came together to make a list of our top 5 most anticipated albums of 2017:

Story | Adam Douglas

1. The Internet

It’s been two years since The Internet released their last album. Ego Death was received well by critics, so much so that it went on to earn a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album of 2015. Since then the world has been patiently waiting to see what Syd and the gang will do next as The Internet. In a recent interview with The Fader, The Internet revealed that not only will they be releasing a new album in 2017, but that the band’s members Syd and Matt Martins will both be releasing solo albums in the same year. This is great news for everyone and definitely compensates for the time that’s passed since their last release.

2. Chance the Rapper’s Debut Album

Chance is really something special to the world of hip-hop. He’s truly an independent artist who has made heavy influences in the game, collaborated with legends and has gone on sold out tours all around the globe. It’s one thing to make these accomplishments without being signed to a major label, but many forget that that young Chicago native has yet to release his debut album. Towards the end of 2016 Chance revealed that he is indeed working on his debut and if his previous releases are only considered “mixtapes,” we’re excited to see what Chance could do with a full blown album.

3. Drake and Kanye’s Collaboration Album

Since Jay-Z and Kanye’s critically acclaimed Watch the Throne there’s been a significant increase in the amount of collaboration tapes such as Drake and Future’s What a Time to Be Alive and Big Sean and Jhené Aiko’s Twenty88. Last year there was much speculation that Kanye and Drake were working on a joint album, and in September Kanye confirmed that there is indeed a collaboration album in the works. There’s much hype behind the project for obvious reasons; it’s Kanye and Drake, two of the music industry’s biggest superstars. We’ve seen the two collaborate before a handful of times but it will be interesting to see how the moguls will work side by side on a full length LP.

4. Where is Kendrick Lamar?

As of lately Kendrick Lamar has been pretty quiet, which is good because it means he’s probably busy cooking up something in the studio. Early 2016, he followed up his Pac inspired album To Pimp a Butterfly with Untitled Unmastered, a composite album made up of various unreleased Kendrick songs. Although gratifying to some, it wasn’t a well thought out piece of work like TPAB and Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. We’re ready for Kendrick’s next album because it’s going on two years now that we’ve heard some fresh material from him. Whatever it is that’s keeping King Kendrick busy, we’re look forward to hear it.

5. Logic

When Logic first donned his NASA jacket to promote his last album The Incredible True Story, fans were excited to see what story the Maryland MC was going to tell. But the one question that always remains whenever an artist drops a concept album is: “what next?” Will they continue on with the story they started to tell? Will they tell an entirely new story? Logic’s intentions are geared toward speaking from the AfricAryaN in his blood.

Wish List: Childish Gambino…?

Undeniably 2016 was a very successful year for Donald Glover; he was cast in Spider-Man: Homecoming and as the legendary Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Star Wars movie, released his hit show Atlanta, became a father, performed at Joshua tree for his Pharos tour, released a funk album Awaken, My Love!, and to top it off he started off 2017 by earning a Golden Globe award for Atlanta over the weekend.

Now the reason Childish Gambino makes our wish list here at The Lunch Table is because it’s understood the division that fans felt when listening to his new album. It’s been over three years since Because the Internet and many were expecting a rap album from Gambino. Instead they were given something that was totally awesome, but definitely unexpected. A Childish Gambino rap album would put those at ease who were thrown off by the funk and help fill the gap from his last album. Although there’s nothing confirmed by Donald Glover as far as an album this year, we can always wish, right? Regardless at least we’ll have season 2 of Atlanta to look forward to.
