Teacher Uses Hip Hop Lyrics to Teach 6th Grade Students

As a teacher at Discovery Charter School in Rochester, NY Jayo aka Mr. Addison takes a somewhat “unconventional” route to help educate his students. He uses a language him and his 6th graders can speak, hip hop!

Everyday he writes a new lyric from today’s most woke and relevant rappers like J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, and Jay-Z. He even uses the lyrics of artists that we don’t really think of putting in that conscious-rap category, like Rick Ross, whom Mr. Addison says is conscious you just have to catch it.

They decode the messages from the song together and converse about how it applies to their lives. Sometimes he says, when they really get it and are engaging with each other, he just sits back and watches the magic happen.
