On Christmas Day Lil’ Wayne dropped the sixth mixtape in his Dedication series through DatPiff’s website & app. Dedication 6, like its predecessors, contains freestyles over popular tracks; this time instrumentals include the likes of, Kendrick’s “DNA”, Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Life” and 6LACK’s “PRBLMS”.
This is probably the first time a mainstream rapper has freestyled over the came-up ATL rapper, although several have given praise to 6LACK’s first studio album, Free 6LACK, that released a little more than a year ago in November 2016. If you don’t know, 6LACK (pronounced black) was a viral battle rapper on Youtube and homeless before he released the album. Not long after he sold out most of his first headlining tour, he played the Apple Music stage at SXSW 2016, and then had the cutest baby (mentioned across Free 6LACK) named Syx. *queue all the love emojis*
This freestyle is incredibly important for the hip hop industry because of the way it connects old and new school rap fans to the generational gaps within the music genre. Lil’ Wayne is a Millennial OG Rapper and with his respect and appreciation for a “newer” rapper being shown on a released song, hopefully will pave the way for others to do the same instead of knocking them for difference in styles.
Weezy F. Baby will be performing at the Adult Video News Awards in the latter half of January.
