Singer/songwriter Jorja Smith is an R&B artist to look out for at Coachella 2018. If you just heard her voice, lyrical content, and her saw her Instagram it’s hard to imagine this mature vocalist to be just 20 years old. Young artists who have such a developed presence excite listeners because the best is often yet to come.

Her voice is reminiscent of the late-great fellow Britt Amy Winehouse who she says is a big influence. Personally, I’m a huge fan of Winehouse so it was hard not to fall in love with Jorja, especially after seeing her live at Tropicalia music festival in Long Beach.
Before gaining traction in the U.S, Jorja was gaining momentum across the pond. You can still watch a young Jorja in her YouTube covers circa 2011. She linked up with her manager at age 15, and since then went on to create her hit single “Where Did I Go?”.
She also appeared on BBC Radio doing a mashup of Luther Vandross and Drake in “Never Too Much”. Jorja’s vocals are perfect in this rendition and it gave me hope that more artists would sample Luther Vandross’s extensive catalogue.
If you are unaware of Jorja but are thinking, “hmmm I have definitely heard her name on somebody’s project,” she appeared on Drake’s More Life playlist on tracks: “Get it Together” and “Jorja’s Interlude”, which gave Jorja notoriety in the States.
Jorja is certainly receiving accolades early in her career. She just took home the 2018 Critics Choice Award at the Brit Awards.
Besides her Drake tracks, Jorja has other notable collabs: “Tyrant” (Kali Uchis ft. Jorja), “On My Mind” (Jorja X Preditah), and most recently “Let Me Down” (Jorja ft. Stormzy). It’s safe to say Jorja’s Coachella set will include some of these special guests.
Jorja dropped her EP Project 11 in 2016 and is expected to drop her debut album this June. 2017 was a big year for Jorja Smith, but I’m expecting even bigger things once she gains more support at Coachella and the album drops.
