Ritchie Valens, Los Lobos, WAR, Sunny & the Sunglows, Thee Midnighters, Malo, and El Chicano are all leaders and icons for Chicano Rock. These artists’ prolific careers have inspired many within the Chicano rock genre.
Similarly, Chicano rap has influencers such as A Lighter Shade of Brown, Baby Bash, Lil Rob, and Snow Tha Product. Most notably, Big Pun is credited as the first Latino rapper to have an album certified platinum as a solo act, and XXL’s most recently ranked 2017 Freshman Kap G rose in popularity thanks to his single “Girlfriend”.
The recent teenage Chicano icon from Hawthorne, California, Omar Banos, otherwise known by his stage name Cuco, is influencing the industry by producing contemporary bilingual and genre blending music. Co-signed by Kevin Abstract and Steve Lacy, “Lo Que Siento.” is a collaboration between Cuco, and company. Translated to “what I feel” in Spanish, “Lo Que Siento” is a love song backed by wavy synths, which details an instance of love between Cuco and a girl that he had spent time with.
Cuco describes how spending time with a girl feels as if it were a dream.

Coming from a first generation Chicano family, he utilizes his bilingualism in songwriting has broadened his horizons for a future audience. Cuco is on the path of becoming a new age Chicano icon as a result of his unique songwriting abilities and style. As a modern day Cupid, he has sold out shows by performing songs from his albums wannabewithyou and songs4u, was a 4th line name on Long Beach’s Tropicalia Music Festival, and will be performing at Coachella on Sunday April 15th & 22nd.
