Bianca Shaw and Attack the Sound are creating a new genre called “Chi-Pop” based out of the Windy City.

Though the Chi is historically known for their distinctive form of blues, rock and roll, house and electronic music, soul and gospel tremendously flourished in the city streets because of Sam Cooke, The Impressions, and The Chi-Lites. Additionally, it’s contemporary music scene rooted hip hop and R&B heavy hitters like Kanye West, Common, Lupe Fiasco, the restored-American idol Taylor Bennett, and the father of hip hop’s baby boomer era, Chance the Rapper.

So when you blend today’s hip hop and Chicago’s boundless history of music, you get acts like the Chance the Rapper & The Social Experiment, Vic Mensa & Kids These Days, and the latest up-and-coming group known as Bianca Shaw & Attack The Sound.

As the drummer, singer and emcee, Bianca Shaw, and Attack the Sound, was scouted by Ken Bennett (Chancelor and Taylor Bennett’s father), and was recently signed to his label Tay Bennett Entertainment. In 2016, Shaw released her project Guns & Roses. Though the opus sonically sounds like a pop album, the Chicago native proves to be an extremely talented emcee on records like “Bi-Polar”, “Blue Ballad” and “The Cypher”.

Attack the Sound consists of 7 members: David Woullard (vocals), Bianca Shaw (emcee), Carl “CJ” Johnson (keys), Paris J’Mal Lawson (drums), André “Oni” Duval (bass), Ezekiel “Zeek the Freak” Raggs (lead guitarist), and Jesse Parks (acoustic guitarist). Together the band manages to radiates this sound they call “Chi-Pop”, which enables them to highlight the best of each member’s abilities and personalities.

When I hear music from Chicago, I feel that its musical acts showcase authenticity between friendships, and materialize love through their unmatchable sounds. After watching this cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie” at Refuge Live in Chicago, Bianca and her band prove that their distinct “Chi-Pop” is carried around in every performance they do together.
