Though Badu hasn’t released any new music this year, she will once again display her talents on stage for the Soul Train Awards. Other performers in Toni Braxton and SWV will be receiving awards from the Don Cornelius Legend Award and Lady of Soul Award, respectively.
Artist nominees gives credit to some of the biggest names in hip hop and R&B. Solange takes the lead with seven nominations including the Best Album/Mixtape for A Seat at the Table, which made her and Beyonce the first sisters and solo artists to have number one albums on the Billboard 200 in the same year. Bruno Mars trails closely behind with six nominations.
Though Rihanna, DJ Khaled, and Bryson Tiller have nominations in their own unique categories, the surprise comes from newcomer singer/songwriter Khalid. With his hit singles “Location” and “Young, Dumb & Broke” from his debut album American Teen, the Texas-native is nominated for Best R&B/Soul or Rap New Artist, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best R&B/Soul Male Artist.
Additionally, Top Dawg Entertainment’s SZA will be competing against Khalid in the Best New Artist Category, but is also nominated for Best Album/Mixtape of the Year from her opus Ctrl, Best R&B/Soul Female Artist, and Best Collaboration from her work with Travis Scott on “Love Galore”.
