Atlanta just got renewed for it’s third season on FX, and it wasn’t long before its mastermind revealed new information on the next installment. Recently Donald Glover paid homage to Kanye West, and noted his inspiration for Atlanta‘s seasons are based off Ye’s albums.
“I align the seasons I think, to me, like Kanye records,” Glover said during an Emmy’s FYC Screening and Panel on June 8th. “I feel like this is our ‘Graduation.’ This is probably our most accessible but also the realest — an honest version of it — and I feel like the most enjoyable, like the third album.”

The rock-inspired, and still sample heavy Graduation time capsules an infamous album battle between Yeezy and 50 Cent at the time. Kanye’s third studio album evidently beat 50’s project by selling 957,000 copies in its first week. Critics claimed that this was the time when gangsta rap was finally defeated as the top sub-genre of hip hop.
With Paper Boi’s thuggish, gangsta rap-inspired tracks and Graduation’s more uplifting sound than its predecessors, Glover might give us a season with a similar tone. Let’s wait and see what Donald has in store for us, like the possibility of him becoming the next Willy Wonka.
